“Jesus replied: ” ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Matthew 22:37-39 (New International Version)
When we talk about spiritual discipline, it brings to mind a rigidity, a scheduling. You know, the Pharisees were best at that, and they were not exactly praised by Jesus. But it’s the commitment (which is discipline) to love. Love God with all your heart is the number one law. You might ask, “How can love be a law?” But that’s what it is. Loving God with all your heart, mind soul and strength, loving your neighbor as yourself, and even loving yourself. In that process, there’s a discipline of the spirit. Jesus says, “If you know me, you’ll love me. If you love me, you’ll keep my commandments.” It’s out of that love that our obedience comes.
